Speaker: Malgorzata Peszynska, Oregon State University

Title: Pore to Darcy to Field scale. Seriously?

Abstract: Fantastic and inspiring work of many researchers over the last several decades clearly shows that it is possible to write beautiful theorems … and useful code … for … upscaling … in porous media. The opportunities and challenges are plentiful, and so now we can do it all: we start from the [nm] at the pore-scale, upscale to [cm] at the Darcy scale, and then we are off to the [km] at the field scale. But can we really do it all? Is everything already known? What about the physics, and what about the data? The presenter has now more questions than answers, and will present some of both, in a tribute to the many collaborators who will be named in the talk and to the community involved in these efforts.

@Oregon State University
Malgorzata (Malgo) Peszynska is a computational mathematician working on modeling coupled processes in the subsurface across many scales. She received PhD in 1992 from University of Augsburg, Germany, and Habilitation from Warsaw University of Technology in 2011. Peszynska held academic positions at the Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw University of Technology, Purdue University, The University of Texas at Austin, and at Oregon State University where she is Professor of Mathematics since 2012. She also served as a Program Director in 2019-21 at the National Science Foundation. Malgo considers SIAM GS as her scientific home, and she served the group as a Program Director (2009-10), Chair (2011-12), Chair of the OC of SIAM GS 2011, in various committees and as a session organizer.
